Storytelling is a powerful tool that has been used for a long time and across cultures. From an early age, stories help us understand how the world works. As LLAA docents, we use this technique to help students interpret artwork and create their own narrative about what is going on in a painting. The visual arts are closely related to storytelling and have evolved from the oldest known figurative paintings in caves, to illustrations of myths and religion, to modern narratives in advertising or even politics. Artists can represent stories in a variety of ways—by using a series of images that convey their tale, or by choosing a central moment that signifies the entire story. This study group invites you to discover and share what you learn about different methods of visual storytelling, from documentaries to creative interpretations of facts, fiction, metaphors or conceptual approaches to stories.
