The day began about 9am in San Jose for the hour's drive to Benicia (I'm pleased to say that seven of the nine participants were able to carpool in two cars). Michael and Linda and their three dogs (including two large, exuberant, and outspoken puppies) greeted us at the door of the glass-brick-fronted building—originally a brewery, then a restaurant and bar—which they acquired in 2000, transforming into their home and studios.
We began in Michael's orderly, high-ceilinged space, where his long, horizontal canvases of desert landscapes—some recently finished, some in progress—traversed the walls. He explained his technique of multiple, thin washes of acrylic that achieve a fine subtlety of color and surface, and his practice of working from memory, with less of the aim to illustrate specific places than to communicate and evoke his experiences of them.
