Bouquets to Art Field Trip
2018-19

Fast friends after attending the 2019 new docent training together, these docents took a field trip on their own to see the Bouquets to Art at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. Liana got to see her “VTS assignment” print represented in flowers! Martha even hobbled her way through on crutches.
Bouquets to Art is the de Young museum’s floral explosion, in its 35th year. Florists from around the world breathe new life into the collections, creating their own masterpieces inspired by famed artworks. Jody Foster wrote this for the Spring 2019 newsletter:
The Study Group Section of 2019 had its first adventure in June when the new Programming Committee, Liana Salikhova, Lotte Van De Walle, and Jody Foster, arranged a group outing for the Let’s Look at Art 2019 docents to tour the “Bouquets to Art” exhibit June 4-9, 2019 at the de Young Museum.
In this annual floral show at the de Young, local florists “interpret” works in the museum’s collection (varying by year) in the form of unique and specially designed bouquets.
The floral interpretations were not only amazingly intricate, technically sophisticated, and beautiful, but they also served to provoke deeper contemplation of the underlying structure and emotional associations of the works of art they attempted to capture in flowers. The 2019 LLAA docents had a great time “VTSing” the relationship of the bouquets to the work of art they represented.
Martha Weber joined the Study Group tour despite having recently sprained her ankle and having to hobble through the exhibit on crutches. All agreed the show was well worth the effort, even Martha. In fact, one member suggested that next year’s Docent Art show should include an entry category for bouquets!
