What do UFOs, Goats, and Lawn Boats Have in Common?
On March 19th, Dorothy Ries Faison took us on a tour of her visual imagery, beginning with an engaging film produced by Simon Holland (her husband) about their life in France. Tony Misch, Continuing Education chairman, introduced her eloquently in the Winter edition of Off the Wall, the newsletter for Let's Look at Art. "I take particular pleasure in bringing my dear friend Dorothy Ries Faison to SJMA. Dorothy employs her singular vision and exceptional draughtsmanship in the service of what she calls “a literature of imagery.” Her pictures offer parables both funny and serious, compassionate and critical, political and personal, told through her unique, symbol-rich visual vocabulary."
“Faison has developed a visual language that is at once deeply personal and yet universally accessible . . . [She has] a sureness of purpose and an aesthetic confidence of a mature, accomplished, innovative, and prolific artist.”
Lee Siegel, Author, University of Hawaii Professor Emeritus Dorothy did not disappoint the room full of art lovers. Her down-to-earth style was charming as she took us through influences and life events that shape her work. Dorothy is the recipient of numerous fellowships, awards, and residencies. Her work is in public and major private collections including the Honolulu Art Museum, The Hawaii State Art Museum and the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. Born in New York, raised in Latin America, and moved to Hawaii at 13, Dorothy and her filmmaker partner now live in France’s Périgord Noir.
