Art in the Dark (AITD) Creates Community Art with Families at Local STEM Faire

Tricia Hill and Barb Nelson were invited to participate in Dartmouth Middle School’s STEM Faire on February 7th. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The Art in the Dark presentations for grades 6-8 add Art to STEM which = STEAM.

With help from Julia Jacobson, Tricia and Barb created the background of a mural inspired by Diego Rivera’s Man, Controller of the Universe and invited students and their families to contribute to the mural during the STEM Faire.  A monitor in the booth displayed images from our Mexican Art and Activism presentation to complement the Rivera mural inspiration.

The theme of the activity was to create images of "STEM of Your Lifetime" where the artists added inventions to the mural that were created during their lifetime. The lifetimes spanned multiple generations of grandparents, parents, and students. Click here for more information.

Pam Rissmann, the STEM teacher who invited Tricia and Barb was delighted with their participation. As she said in her email:

"Thank you so much for participating in our Dartmouth STEM Faire this year. Our students and community had so much fun interacting with you and painting the mural. The mural was amazing and so much fun. True community art. What makes our STEM Faire special is the enthusiasm of our participants and the variety of STEM interests and applications we bring together in one place for one evening. We couldn't do it without you, and we really appreciate the time outside your normal work hours you dedicated to it!”
