Every Spring the San Jose Museum of Art hosts a luncheon to recognize all of its volunteers, including Let's Look at Art Docents, the Docent Council (in-house docents), and the Store Guild. Service pins are awarded for every 5 years of service and Above and Beyond awards are given for extraordinary volunteer service. This year's recipient is Barb Nelson.

10 years:

  • Cathy Fraser: Cathy has been a very active contributor to Let’s Look at Art. In her ten years of very active membership, she has been the Training Chairperson (and happened to train all of this year’s five-year anniversary recipients), Vice-President, President, and is currently the Parliamentarian.

  • Amy Rapport: Amy has also been an important contributor to Let’s Look At Art. In her ten years of service, Amy has been active as Coordinator setting up our initial usage of Filemaker, (which has become an integral part of coordinating assignments), Vice-President, President, Parliamentarian, and currently offers her house as a Portfolio Center.

5 years:

  • The class of 2014 has six active members receiving pins today; we will miss the addition of former treasurer Jim Schuett and former co-coordinator Char Devich whose personal circumstances did not allow them to be active this year. Of the 12 members of this training class, 9 served in leadership positions.

  • Nancy Dunne: Nancy has been an active classroom docent and allowed us to cajole her into become 2018-19 Secretary even as she protested. She has done a wonderful job, we have enjoyed her comradery, and if learning keeps you young the secretary job will allow Nancy to outlive all of us.

  • Linda Pfeiffer: Linda has been active docent for the last four years, then went sustaining for a bit of this year. Her graciousness in agreeing to become active again this year in classroom portfolio presentations has been invaluable and we are grateful for her willingness to serve.

  • Karen Harrington: Karen was not able to be present due to family circumstances, but it is worth pointing out how active she has been over the past five years: 167 Classes, 3,773 Students, 1,930 Hours, and 3,155 Miles !!!

  • Susan Curtin: Susan stepped into a leadership role immediately after joining Lets’ look at Art as co-coordinator. She has served in co-coordinator or the Coordinator chair since 2014 and received the Above and Beyond Award for 2016-17. She is currently the Vice-President, is very active on many different committees, and is the best right hand person I could ask for.

  • Beth Herner: Beth had been a valuable part of Let’s Look at Art throughout her five years of service. She gives portfolio presentation for K-5, and also gives Art in the Dark Presentations for middle and high school students. She also keeps herself busy as a former membership chair and is currently our marketing and recruiting chair.

  • Jean Kellett: We are so proud of Jean’s service to Let’s Look at Art because she has been our training chairperson for the past three years. Training is such an important job—not only did Jean invest her time in assuring that new docents were trained correctly, she took on the responsibility to makes sure our membership had access to refresher training and worked closely with Alysia Carryl to deliver meaningful training material.

  • Susan McGowan: Current LLAA President. While serving as Vice President, she concurrently held the leadership role as Continuing Education Chair, planned meetings, arranged for outside speakers, gallery tours, round table discussions and other activities. Susan also houses a portfolio center, and is a tireless worker, super organized, and a true asset to our organization.

All of these anniversaries celebrate the service of people who have made valuable contributions to Let’s Look At Art and who have had a profound impact on the organization.
