Dia de los Muertos Community Day
From Allora Armstrong (Education Program Coordinator, SJMA): “SJMA celebrated its annual Día de los Muertos Community Day with a day of art-making activities, cultural demonstrations, and live performances. Guests celebrated the Day of the Dead by decorating their very own Calavera (sugar skull), crafting a paper Mariposa (Butterfly), or taking photos with a roaming Calaca (Skeleton). The museum hosted a 25-minute dance performance by Los Lupeños de San José followed by a 20-minute participatory dance, as well as a live demonstration on Ofrenda (altar) building by local artist Phyllis Carrasco. At the end of the day, admissions tallied up a final number of 1,746 visitors through our museum doors!”
