General Meeting & Speaker: Artist Claudia Fitch
2019-20
Tuesday, September 24, 2019
Claudia Fitch tells us how she, as a public artist "cognizant of the life of the street, or a public site" seeks to create artworks that "capture an exquisite moment of the here and now."
Claudia has been making paintings, drawings, installations, and sculptures for nearly 50 years, during which time she has worked in the Pacific Northwest, on the East Coast, and in Europe. Her focus on sculpture and public art began when, as a graduate student in Rome, she was struck by "the power of good urban/streetscape design" and how the interplay of sculpture and architecture "set the stage for a rich social drama." Claudia is represented by galleries in Seattle and New York; her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and is included in major collections. She lives near Seattle, dividing her creative energies between her studio practice and public projects.
Claudia will give us a window onto the complex and demanding process of creating work for public places. "My work in public art playfully re-invents icons familiar in pop culture and art history, with the intention of linking a contemporary site with its over-arching cultural narratives. The social, architectural and functional realities of each specific site guide my work in developing noteworthy imagery, as well as in choosing the placement, scale and material construction of the artwork."
