2024 - Study Group - Art Goes to The Movies

The Study Group was held virtually on May 7th. The topic was "Art goes to The Movies." The docents were asked to share and explore the world of visual art in the cinema. We had four presentations and several docents as observers; Jody Foster, Liliya, Lotte and Suman gave presentations on Camile Claudel, James Morrison, Scottish Landscape artist, Lotte, "Lotte, That Silhouette Girl and Suman, Yoyoi Kusama. Our docent observers were: Lisa Dearborn, Christina Zhao, Ellen, Lisa Traveler, Kathy Benedick and Pamala Ryalls-Boyd.

 

Jody Foster spoke about Camille Claudel and her relationship with August Rodin. There are two movies you may enjoy watching about here life: "Camille Claudel," and "Camille Claudel 1915."

 

Liliya spoke about the work of the Scottish landscape painter, James Morrison. You can wartch the trailer of this beautiful autobiographical movie, "The eye of the Storm" by clicking on this link. The music from this movie is called "Rivers Run." Click on the link to listen to it.

 

Lotte shared the movie about the artist Lotte Reiniger. She was best known for her silhouette films. she cut up and hand manipulated her figures frame to frame. Here is the link to the movie trailer: Lotte, That Sihouette Girl.

 

Finally, Suman spoke about the Japanese contemporary artist, Yoyoi Kusuma. The movie, Kusuma: Infinity shows her life and work from her beginnings in Japan to becoming an internationally known artist. You can see the trailer by clicking on the link: Kusuma: Infinity
