Field Trip to the Wayne Thiebaud Exhibit
de Young Museum, San Francisco – July 18, 2025
Art Comes from Art
“I believe very much in the tradition that art comes from art and nothing else.
Art for me simply means doing something extraordinarily well. And doing it in such a way that it
becomes rare, a tremendous achievement, and a human experience symbolically reduced to an
essential prime number or example.”
— Wayne Thiebaud
Our docent group had a truly enjoyable day exploring the fabulous paintings of Wayne Thiebaud
at the de Young Museum. We were especially fortunate that Alka was able to arrange for two
docents to guide us through the exhibition—a rare treat since docent-led tours are not normally
available without advance reservations.
A special thank you goes out to our carpool drivers—Marcia Klein, Lisa Lewis, and Cathy
Fraser—for making the trip possible. Fourteen docents attended the outing: Suman Ganapathy,
Marcia Klein, Carol Wynn, Harriet Erbes, Loyce Mandella, Lisa Lewis, Barb Nelson,
Cathy Fraser, Joseph Coha, Louise Persson, Jean Kellett, Linda Klein, and Lisa Dearborn.
After touring the exhibit, the group gathered for lunch in the museum café, where the irresistible
desserts were especially fitting—how could we resist after seeing so many of Thiebaud’s
luscious cake paintings?
A big thank you as well to Suman Ganapathy, Barb Nelson, and Lisa Dearborn for sharing
their wonderful photos of the day.
