Our November general meeting was held in San Jose Museum of art's Wendel Center. Our wonderful Hospitality co-chair, Debbie Earl guided us in a fun ice breaker. We broke into small groups and were asked to share the keys to our cars. We give a brief description of our cars, why we bought them and did we enjoy driving them. It was fun learning a little more about the lives of our fellow docents. Kelsey introduced Shelby to our group. Shelby will be taking over for Kelsey while she is on maternity leave. Cathy Fraser purchesd some great books from Hicklebee's Children's bookstore on behalf of LLAA and presented them to Kelsey. Every child needs exciting books in their library. Cathy also got up early to go to Peter's Bakery to get their delicious pastries for all of us to enjoy.
After our break,Tony Misch introduced his friend, Rachel Nelson; Director and chief curator of the Institute of the Arts and Sciences at UCSC and a professor in the department of Art History and Visual Culture. She gave an indepth talk on the initiative, Visualizing Abolition.
She then led us on a quick tour of the museum's current exhibition, "Seeing Through Stone" of which she co-curated.
There is a brief video of Rachel talking about Maria Gaspar's work featuring 24 bars and bricks made of glass that represents the bars and bricks torn down from the prison near her home in Chicago. Click on the link here: Maria Gaspar.
