Community Day at the Museum Celebrating Dia de los Muertos

There was such a beautiful atmosphere during Día de los Muertos Community Day! Our docents connected with so many visitors, shared information about our Let’s Look at Art program, and invited them to the Day in the Life of a Docent.

We enjoyed the lively music and dancers in the lobby of the museum. Along with crafts, music and dancing; the museum set up an Ofrenda. This is a traditional alter used for the Mexican celebration for Dia de los Muertos to honor and welcome deceased loved ones. Examples of items adorning these altars can be photos of the deceased, marigolds, candles, their favorite foods along with other personal mementos and traditional items like pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and decorative paper banners.

A big thank-you to Jeff, Kelsey, and Shelby, who made our table extra inviting with coloring sheets and crayons for families to take home. It was such a joy to see children proudly showing off their colorful sugar skulls and castanets!

Thank you also to Tricia Hill, Joseph Coha, Kristina Eng, and Amy Mears for volunteering in the galleries and helping facilitate the activity stations at the Wendel Center and Skybridge.

Special thanks to Tony Misch, who designed a fantastic recruiting poster and flyer that caught peoples' attention and directed them to our website.

Thank you Suman and Lotte for the photos and text for this post.
